If you have a pond in the vicinity of large trees, you may need to consider using pond netting to prevent excessive leaves from falling into the water. This should be done before the first frost, usually in October. The process of fall netting involves stretching a net across the pond and anchoring it with rocks and/or pins. The net should not rest on the water surface as it will be difficult to remove with all the debris on it. Once all the leaves have fallen, the net can be removed for the winter.
During fall, your pond plants are thriving from their summer growth. However, when winter approaches, the freezes will cause the lush foliage to turn brown and ugly. If left unattended, this foliage will eventually die and fall into the pond, causing a mess that needs to be cleaned up in the Spring. Therefore, it's recommended that you prune all pond plants to within 1 inch of the water surface. This process should be performed after the first frost, usually in late October or early November.
Maintaining your pond during winter is crucial. Approximately 70% of pond owners choose to shut down their pond system during winter because they find it difficult to maintain it in the harsh winter months. However, the aesthetic benefits of having a winter pond are worth the effort, so if possible, try to keep your pond running. If shutting down your pond is your preferred option, be sure to take the necessary precautions to protect the fish, plants, and pump system.
To prepare your pond for winter, start by removing any excess debris and adding Activated Pond Carbon. As a resident of New Jersey, you'll experience ice formation in your pond during the winter. While this may not be ideal, you can still enjoy the view of your pond from indoors during the winter months.
You have two options for your pond during winter - you can either keep it running or shut it down. To shut your pond down, unplug the pump, remove it from the pond, and store
